The development of digital computer technology in the early 80’s also led to the use of similar applications in the field of dentistry. With CAD (Computer Aided Design) – CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) systems, porcelain fillings, crowns and laminated veneers are designed and produced faster and with less errors.
After removing the caries or after preparing an intact tooth tissue, the optic measurement taken by a digital camera is transferred to the computer as a 3D model. In accordance with the screen model, the physician creates the restoration closest to the natural form of the tooth and design the optimal contact with the adjacent teeth. Ready-made ceramic blocks are scraped by drills from three different directions. The restoration is then adhered to the teeth with special restoration-binding agents.
By narrowing the physician’s angle view and by keeping the treatment time for the difficult-to-access posterion region of the mouth, where the patient should keep his mouth open for a long time, the patient’s comfort increases and the compatibility of the restoration.
With CAD-CAM systems, dental appointments are reduced and the traditional impression taking procedure is eliminated.
The pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of the molars is symmetrically prepared or shaped in accordance to the existing tooth to achieve maximum and effective function.
