With the development of dental technology, traditional dental treatment methods are gradually being replaced by digital dentistry. The use of computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD / CAM) systems in dentistry provides great convenience to both dentists and patients. CAD / CAM systems have many advantages over routinely used conventional methods. These devices make it possible to make crowns with esthetic materials in a short period of time as 1-2 hours.
Another advantage of these systems is the use of digital impression with the help of special oral scanners instead of traditional impression materials which can cause nausea. Digital impressions are transferred to the computer in three dimensions. After the design of the restoration is completed on the computer, it is transferred to the milling machine. The restoration milled from the special porcelain blocks is prepared to be adhered to the mouth.
CAD / CAM systems provide a great advantage especially for patients with hyperactive gag reflex. Patients with hyperactive gag reflexes can now have prosthesis at ease and within a single session. Shortening the time of dental treatment and preparing the porcelain crowns in a single visit provides a great benefit to patients in overcoming dental phobia. In addition, the restorations produced with computer aided systems has shown a better fit comparing to other systems. This increases the success rate of the long-term restoration.
With the help of computer-assisted systems, not only crowns but also laminates also known as leaf porcelains, can be produced. In addition, the inlay-onlay designed with these systems creates the ideal contact areas on the teeth and prevents food impactions due to old fillings.
