There are nerve tissues in the teeth that runs along the root and joins the jawbone. When tooth decay occurs it progresses slowly to the nerve tissue. Pain occurs when nerve tissues comes in contact with the rotten bacteria. In order to relieve this pain in the tooth, root canal treatment is usually applied.
What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is the process of removing the nerves that are damaged by trauma or caries, usually microorganisms and dead cells that cause inflammation, washing it with special solutions and filling the canal with canal fillers.
When is Root Canal Treatment applied?
- Advanced deep caries leading to the nerve of the tooth.
- Fractured roots /crowns after trauma
- When a tooth has lost its vitality due to excessive force caused by teeth grinding and clenching
- Advanced gingival diseases
A root canal therapy is needed if there is:
- Hot/ Cold sensitivity
- Pain without any trigger, especially at night
- Pain while eating
- Swelling due to abscess formation, which can be detected by a change in the tooth color.
How is Root Canal Treatment applied?
Before starting the root canal treatment, anesthesia is applied so that the patient feels no pain. The caries are then cleaned until the nerves are reached. The nerves and tissues along the root are cleaned and dressing is applied. The treatment is completed by filling the canals with special filling materials until the end of the root.
Root canal treatment can be completed in a single sesssion, or several sessions according to the condition of the tooth.
