For an optimal smile, only a maximum of 1-2 mm of gum should be seen in the maxillary line of the upper jaw. Too much gum tissue (gummy smile) affects the aesthetic appearance and it’s a condition that is quite common these days. A gummy smile is often caused by inflammation on the upper jaw, use of some drugs, excessive growth due to genetic reasons, excessive bone growth on the tooth surface of the upper jaw bone, tooth malalignment, and hypermobile lips.
There are several treatment options depending on the factors causing a gummy smile. If the gummy smile is caused by dental dysfunction or skeletal factors, orthodontic treatment/ orthognathic surgery is applied to ensure that the teeth and are appropriately positioned. In cases of excessive growth of gums or variations in teeth positions, gingival treatment (pink aesthetic) is performed to address the gummy smile. Moreover, botox can be applied to address hypermobile lips but the effect of botox is temporary and must be administered repeatedly after a certain period.
