Understanding Oral Health During Pregnancy
The frequency of brushing your teeth during pregnancy can be reduced depending on the severity of the nausea. Frequent snacking and vomiting may increase acidity in the saliva. However, these can be prevented by proper maintenance techniques. To prevent nausea, small tipped toothbrushes and dental flosses can be used. You can increase the consumption of calcium-rich foods and water to neutralize acidic environment. You can also consume xylitol containing chewing gums. The number of opportunistic bacteria that cause gingival diseases due to changes in hormone levels during pregnancy may increase and this may cause gingival bleeding and inflammation. If left untreated during pregnancy, gingival tumors may occur. It is important to note that gum diseases increase the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight infant.
