Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery is a branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all diseases related to soft and hard tissues in the mouth and the jawbones.
This field is a large area of interest because it includes the cheeks, tongue, lip, salivary glands, tempomandibular joint, teeth and jaw bones and sorrounding tissues.
This field includes the following:
Before the Implant surgery:
Before the implant surgery, a detailed and systematic medical history, radiological and intraoral examinations are performed to determine whether the jaw bone is sufficient enough to receive the implant. Nowadays, 3D computed tomography is used as a reliable source to evaluate the jaw bone sufficiency and the relationships within anatomical structures.
In cases where the length and width of the jaw bones are insufficient, advanced surgical interventions are need to increase the bone volume, sufficient enough for the implant to be placed. In these cases, the most appropriate method is determined by considering the patient’s general health status and by evaluating the related area.
Although the methods used in lower and upper jaw bones differ, bones can be taken from the patient, or an animal or synthetic derived grafts are used to increase bone volume. The appropriate method is determined by the surgeon by detailed analysis.
Sinus operation is one of the many advanced surgical internventions and is frequently asked by patients. Sinus lifting operation is performed in the upper jaw region in cases where bone resorbs and is insufficient for implants. Bone resorption occurs when a missing tooth is not replaced for a long period of time and when there is a gum disease. The main purpose of this operation is increase the bone volume by enlarging the sinus membrane and putting the graft in the created cavity. With this operation, the sinus base is raised, allowing the formation of the new bones sufficient enough for the dental implant.
Orthognatic Surgery
Skeletal deformities in the jaw bones can be caused by congenital anomalies, genetic or environmental factors causing inappropriate positioning of the chewing plane. As a result, various aesthetic and functional problems occur. For congenital or acquired reasons, complaints vary from patient to patient as a result of abnormal size or positioning of the jaw bones. Complaints can significantly affect the quality of life and health status of patients . Skeletal deformities in the jaw-face region result in chewing and swallowing difficulties, sleep apnea, breathing problems, phonation problems, aesthetic disorders and associated social and psychological problems. An experienced team of orthodontist and maxillofacial surgeons in the treatment of these deformities is important. The operation of an experienced team consisting of an orthodontist and maxillofacial surgeon is important in the treatment of deformities. While the orthodontist is doing some corrections and leveling, the maxillofacial surgeon brings the jaw bones in the the ideal position and the spreading treatment is completed.
