Gingival Pigmentation
What is Gingival Pigmentation?
The shape and color of the teeth as well as the gums are very important to achieve an aesthetic smile.
The color of the gums is determined by the amount of melanin, the pigment that also determines the color of our skin. Gingival pigmentation occurs due to excessive accumulation of melanin pigments in the gums. Although this condition does not cause any health problems, the dark coloration of the gums, which are normally pale pink, creates aesthetic problems.
How is Gingival Pigmentation Treated?
The most effective and most advanced technique for correcting this aesthetic problem is eliminating the pigments with laser devices. Compared to the conventional method of scraping the outer layers of the gums by blades or abrasive rotating tools, laser treatment lessens the need for anesthesia and shortens the treatment time. The most important advantages of this technique are; it does not cause bleeding and infection because of its sterilization feature.
